  • Beautiful Maine 2

OK, Here are a few photos of our place in Maine - mostly looking out over the lake. This is a glacial lake with native land-locked salmon. It's over 180 feet deep at one point - Our camp is at the entrance to a cove.

  • Wow how beautiful I don't know how you stay away! Your house is cute as can be! =-)

  • @lovemoonstars -  Thanks for the comment.

  • That looks so nice. Mind if I come live with you?

  • @Da__Vinci -  LOL
The first 12 years [1970-82] we had this place it had no access other than a jeep trail and certainly no power. Aladden kerosene lamps, outhouse, bathing in the lake [brrr]. It's fairly small and generally fills up with relatives during the summer. A friend down the lake can never say no to visitors and has had to buy the camp next to hers for overflow - this year she built another semi-detached cabin for grandchildren. For some reason this part of the country is popular this time of year - maybe its the nights in the 50s and days in the 70s.
In february however, there is 24-30 inches of ice on that nice lake. During lumbering days a century ago, they actually laid a railroad out across the ice.
Also the food up here is limited; we have to make do with blueberries and lobsters. Our nextdoor neighbors do not want to be crowded so they bought all the land behind our camps and the island out in front - several hundred acres - makes it nice for us, we have about two acres - about 300+ feet of lakefront. Being a member of a summer colony is interesting - you certainly meet people you never would have otherwise. Downeast Mainers are also a breed unto themselves -some of their families were actually here before the pilgrims hit Massachusetts.
My wife and I went to school in Boston and NH - that's how we happened to end up spending our summers here.
The photo I use as an icon is the catboat Tyche - she was always sailed in the Florida Keys. Our boat on this lake is somewhat smaller.

  • You are blessed to have such a place of beauty. The photo's depicts a remarkable place where one can dwell and be in touch with nature.

  • Dear Dick,

I was going to ask when I could come on over, but I just read your comment to Da Vinci about visitors and family. Still, you are blessed to spend time during your golden years here by the lake in summertime. Beautiful pictures. The cottage is cozy and cute.

Also, now I have a history to go with your profile pic. I'm always interested in the usernames people choose.

    Please pass the blueberries.

  • OMG Maine is so gorgeous in the summertime!  I used to go to Conway, NH every year for 16 years, my exhusband's family has a cool home on a lake there.  It reminded me a little.  Good times!  The sounds of the LOONS!  Awesome!

  • Waiting in anticipation for a new blog entry.
