  • NEW ENGLAND FALL COLORS

I just drove to Bangor to get the CR-V serviced for the trip back to Florida. I went the "back way" and met about three cars during most of the 25 miles. The Birches, Ashes, Maples, and Oaks are all doing their Fall thing. It was close to freezing a couple of nights ago and that seems to bring Autumn colors out. The Sumacs and blueberry fields have been bright red for a couple of weeks now. This is Northern New England at its most spectacular.
Lots of cruise ships come in to Bar Harbor this time of year. The Queen Mary II was here the first of the week. I don't think they let the passengers out of town until they had bought something from each store in that somewhat tacky town. The QM2 is the largest passenger liner now sailing. It looks sort of like a hotel laid on its side. If you are going to cruise, smaller is better, unless you want feel like you haven't left home and enjoy wallowing in (very expensive) luxury.
We will be driving down next week, through western Maine and down through the New Hampshire mountains. From there we will more-or-less follow our trip up in reverse, staying well west of the N-S I-95 corridor. As some of the Blue Ridge Parkway is washed out (hurricanes in the mountains!), we will probably follow I-81 down to Chattanooga and cross through the Smokies at the National Park. Than down through central Georgia (skirting Atlanta) and so to Tallahassee. It takes about four leisurely days.

  • Okay, read back in Robyn's Journal when she talks about her childhood.  Somewhere in there she said she was never allowed to have any toys, only books.  I'm pretty sure that that comes from a movie I watched but I can't remember the name of it.  It was a comedy and I think Danny DiVeto was in it.

  • SAJO - I am not sure what sort of weird thing you have against me, and I am not sure why.  Yes, my childhood was weird - so?  My mom hated toys and thought they were a waste of time. I did actually have one toy - a yellow bus with little figures in it.  I kept it perfect from the time I got it at age 4 until my sister stole it from me (because she thought it was so neat that I kept it perfect) when I was 20.

Why did I only have books?  Because I guilted my mom into it.  I would whine and complain for her to buy them for me, but I could only get the ones that were at the grocery store (not always the most intellectual selection there)  But, beggars can't be choosers, right? I did use every opportunity I could to go to the library and real book stores, though.

Keep in mind that I was from my mother's second marriage - she was 18 and 19 when she had my bro and sis - and 30 when she had me. She had done all the cutesy stuff with them and was sick of it by the time she had me.

Honestly, I think I have had a boring, albeit odd, life.  If your life has been more, "mainstream" than mine - good for you! I spent my childhood wishing - pleading - to go to a boarding school because I hated my home life so much.  How did I know what a boarding school was?  From, "Facts of Life"  When I realized those girls were LIVING AT THEIR SCHOOL - I was AMAZED!!  How COOL would that be?! I didn't know where any were, of course - but I wanted to go to one.

Maybe you think I am weird and making up my life - that's fine.  I think it's odd that you cannot imagine that anyone's life could possibly be different from how you think it should be.

I could go on, but why bother?

  • Your trip back sounds nice.  I haven't been to the Smokie Mountains since I was a kid.  I remember going up, up, up around curves and looking over the edge while my dad was driving thinking I sure hope he doesn't drive over the edge!  I have never liked heights.

Have a safe trip back.  Emily

  • You really helped me understand this topic with your informative post, thanks for all the hard work.
